Custom Valances Gatineau

The band that crowns the window. Hides the rod, frames the view, adds a note of colour or texture.

A custom valance in Gatineau is the finishing touch that turns a window from “covered” to “complete.” This band of fabric, hung across the top of the window, hides the rod or the blind’s headrail, frames the view and adds colour or texture without weighing the room down.

At Stores d’Aujourd’hui, we make valances in our Gatineau workshop, to your taste and specifications. Some people call them window cornices or toppers; the idea is the same.

Valance styles

Flatclean, simple linescontemporary decor, modest windows

Cascadefolds falling down the sideswide windows, classic rooms

A flat valance is the most discreet. A draped one is softer and more romantic. Cascade and scalloped styles add movement and personality.

Where a valance makes the difference

  • Over curtains: it hides the rod and the top of the curtain, and gives the window a finished look. See our custom curtains.
  • Over a blind: it hides the headrail and softens a more functional blind, such as a Roman shade or a roller shade.
  • In the kitchen: a band of fabric that dresses the window without crowding the counter.
  • On a low window: hung higher, it can make the opening feel taller.

Fabrics, lining and mounting

Fabric

We work in drapery fabric, cotton, linen, velvet and blends. The fabric can match your drapes or be coordinated for contrast.

Lining and interlining

Lining and interlining are included. They support the fabric and help the valance hold its shape.

Mounting

The valance is mounted on the wall or ceiling, and the hardware is supplied. It is made to the width of your window.

How to choose your valance

  1. Bring a photo of the style you like. If not, our advisors will suggest a model that fits your decor.
  2. Think about height: the right proportion depends on the ceiling, the window and the style, and an advisor can check it with you.
  3. Choose the fabric to suit your drapes, your walls and how the room is used.
  4. Think of the whole window: a valance works best when designed with the rest of the treatment. See our custom drapes page.

Care

Dust the valance from time to time with a soft brush or a vacuum on low power. Cleaning depends on the fabric and lining, so ask us for the right method before washing anything. In a kitchen, an easy-care fabric is generally the more practical choice.

Made in Gatineau, with a warranty

Your valance is made in our Gatineau workshop. The usual lead time is 3 to 5 weeks. Tailoring is covered by a lifetime warranty. On request, an advisor comes to measure each window to the 1/8 inch, included in your quote. We serve Gatineau (including Hull, Aylmer and Buckingham), Chelsea, Cantley, Ottawa and the Outaouais.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

What we get asked most

Why add a valance to my drapes?

Three reasons. It hides the rod and blind headrail, gives visual weight to the window, and adds contrast or texture without needing a heavier curtain. It's also a good finishing touch on a window dressed with a blind alone.

What valance styles do you make?

We make flat, draped, cascade, scalloped and modern valances. You can also bring us a photo or sketch of the one you like. If not, our advisors will suggest a style that suits your decor and the shape of your window.

Is a valance a good idea for a kitchen window?

Yes, it's a common way to dress a kitchen window, adding colour without crowding the counter or getting in the way of opening the window. Choose an easy-care fabric and ask us what cleaning method suits it.

Can the valance match my drapes or blinds?

Yes. We can make it in the same fabric as your drapes or in a coordinated one, for a unified or more contrasting look. It also pairs with Roman shades, roller shades and shutters, whose headrail or mechanism it can hide.

Is lining included?

Yes, lining and interlining are included. They give the valance body, help it hold its shape. The choice of lining, including blackout, is made with your advisor, based on the fabric you pick and how much sun the window gets.

Can a valance dress a very wide window?

Yes. The valance is made to the width of your window or wall of windows. Mounting is on the wall or ceiling, and the hardware is supplied. The usual lead time is 3 to 5 weeks, and tailoring is covered by a lifetime warranty.
